Alyssa DeFlorentis was elected as an International Officer at Catalyst 2024 in Orlando. She is a member of the Beta Upsilon Beta Chapter at Cuyahoga Community College – Westshore in Ohio.
When I first joined Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), I had no idea how much serving as a PTK officer would shape my college experience and future. From serving as Vice President of Fellowship in my chapter to leading as Chapter President, Ohio Regional District Representative, and Ohio Regional Vice President, each role taught me valuable lessons, pushed me to grow, and allowed me to make a meaningful impact. Without these experiences, I wouldn’t have been prepared to take on the role of International Officer.
Making a Difference in Your Chapter or Region
As a Chapter and Regional Officer, I had the chance to shape Phi Theta Kappa at both local and regional levels. Leading events, managing projects, and fostering community were deeply rewarding. I saw firsthand how our efforts—through successful fundraisers, engaging service projects, and improved communication—positively impacted members.
Highlights of my chapter leadership included planning bake sale fundraisers, organizing fellowship picnics, and speaking at induction ceremonies. These experiences allowed me to guide projects and create memorable moments for our members. As a Regional Officer, I expanded my role to planning regional conferences, designing breakout sessions, and fostering engagement across chapters.
Collaborating with other officers to launch new initiatives and witnessing the tangible results of our work was incredibly fulfilling. It was motivating to see our collective efforts unite members and make a meaningful difference in our community. These experiences not only strengthened our chapter and region but also deepened my commitment to Phi Theta Kappa’s mission.
Building Leadership Skills
Leadership was central to my roles, helping me develop skills that remain invaluable. Organizing regional conferences taught me event planning and logistics, while leading chapter meetings improved my public speaking and facilitation skills. Representing my region provided lessons in networking and diplomacy, helping me build relationships and advocate effectively. These experiences honed my abilities in goal setting, task delegation, and problem-solving, boosting my confidence and preparing me for future leadership roles.
Expanding Your Network
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time as an officer was the network I built, which has proven invaluable in both my personal and professional life. From fellow students and PTK alumni to college administrators, the connections I made provided essential support, mentorship, and even career opportunities. Attending regional and national conferences was a highlight of my PTK journey. These events allowed me to exchange ideas, share our chapter’s successes, and learn from others. The friendships and professional relationships I developed continue to benefit me long after my time in chapter and regional roles, and they remain a key part of my ongoing role as an international officer.
Personal Growth and Confidence
Serving as a PTK officer was a transformative experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and fostered significant personal growth. Each role brought its own set of challenges, teaching me to trust my instincts, make decisions under pressure, and take responsibility for my actions. The confidence I gained from these experiences has been transformative, enhancing my self-assurance and resilience. These lessons have stayed with me, continually shaping how I approach new opportunities and face obstacles.
Enhancing Your Academic and Career Prospects
My officer positions in PTK have been instrumental in advancing my academic and professional journey. These roles showcased my commitment to making a difference and demonstrated my ability to balance responsibilities while excelling academically. Additionally, my time as an officer opened doors to scholarships and other recognitions, easing the financial burden of college and supporting my career goals. The experiences and skills I gained through PTK have made me a more competitive candidate in both academic and professional settings.
Giving Back to the Community
Leading community service projects as a PTK officer was one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role. Whether organizing a sporting equipment drive for local high schools, volunteering at the local food bank, or advocating for important causes, these projects allowed us to create positive change and give back to our community. These experiences deepened my sense of purpose and fulfillment, reinforcing the importance of service in my life and showing me the tangible impact we can make in the lives of others.
Inspiring Future Leaders
Mentoring and inspiring others has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my time as an officer. By stepping into leadership roles, I had the opportunity to set an example for fellow members and encourage them to embrace new challenges. As a Chapter President and later as a Regional Officer, I guided and supported other members in their PTK journey. Watching them grow into confident leaders was incredibly fulfilling and remains a highlight of my ongoing involvement in PTK.
Final Thoughts
Running for a Chapter or Regional Officer position in Phi Theta Kappa has been one of the best decisions I made during my community college journey. The skills I’ve developed, the connections I’ve forged, and the impact I’ve made on my chapter and region are invaluable. These experiences have helped me grow as a leader, a student, and a person.
If you’re a PTK member considering taking your involvement to the next level, I highly encourage you to run for an officer position. It’s an opportunity to make a difference, develop essential skills, and create lasting memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.
