The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa has added a transfer scholarship exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members who are non-Alabama residents: $6,000 a year for two years.

Founded in 1831, The University of Alabama (UA) was the state’s first public college. It’s well-known for its college football program, but it boasts impressive academic stats too:

  • Its enrollment includes more than 600 National Merit Scholars.
  • Fifty-six UA students have been named Goldwater Scholars, including three in 2019.
  • It has produced 15 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 33 Hollings Scholars, and 15 Boren Scholars.
  • Ten alumni and students won Fulbright Awards for the 2019-2020 academic year, and six were named as alternates.

There are nearly 600 student organizations on campus; and, through the Center for Service and Leadership, students put in more than 1 million service hours in the 2018-2019 academic year.

The University of Alabama already has a PTK scholarship for in-state members. Learn more about UA and its new Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarship in this brief Q&A.

Tell us about your college’s new transfer scholarship for PTK members:

The University of Alabama is offering a new Phi Theta Kappa scholarship for out-of-state students. The Phi Theta Kappa Capstone Scholarship is a competitive award available for non-Alabama residents who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa organization on their community college campus with at least a 3.5 GPA and 45 hours of completed coursework. If awarded, the student will receive $6,000 a year for two years ($3,000 a semester for four semesters).

Why does your college feel it is important to offer a scholarship opportunity for members?

The University of Alabama always strives to recruit and enroll the best and brightest students from across the U.S. We know that Phi Theta Kappa members embody those characteristics, therefore we want to reward their tremendous achievements while also encouraging them to become a part of the proud Crimson Tide tradition of excellence.

Are there other transfer scholarships that could be stacked with your Phi Theta Kappa award?

In addition to the PTK Capstone Scholarship, The University of Alabama offers the Capstone Transfer Scholarship for non-Alabama residents, which covers the out-of-state portion of tuition for two years (four semesters). This is also a competitive award but can be stacked with the PTK Capstone Scholarship.

The University of Alabama also offers both automatic, merit-based awards as well as competitive scholarships for in-state residents at Alabama community colleges, including the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Scholarship, which is automatically awarded to any student in the state of Alabama who is a member of their community college’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter.

What other opportunities are available for transfer students at your institution to assist them in successfully transitioning from community college?

Bama Fast Pass is a program that allows transfer students to gain access to their UA degree plan while enrolled at their local community college. It has allowed students to know from their very first semester at the community college exactly what classes they need to take there to complete their UA degree.

Given that one of the primary concerns for transfer students is finishing their degree “on time” even after transferring, Bama Fast Pass has been a critical tool in helping them toward this goal. They also get to see their progress toward this degree, even when they are several semesters away from actually transferring, encouraging them in persistence to graduation.

Additionally, we have heard from community college advisors who love the ability to advise their students effectively, knowing that they can confidently assist students in choosing classes that they know will transfer directly to their UA degree program.

Are there any special events or deadlines on your recruitment calendar that you would like to share?

Each year, The University of Alabama hosts two Transfer Day events, one in the fall and one in the spring. These events focus on transfer-specific topics related to admissions, scholarships, academics, housing, and more. Students can tour the campus, speak with advisors, and connect with current students and staff about the endless opportunities they will encounter during their time at UA. Learn more.
