Social advocate, best-selling author and television host Wes Moore will be honored at the Annual Convention in Nashville as Phi Theta Kappa’s Distinguished Alumnus for 2012.

Moore overcame disciplinary challenges as an adolescent to become actively engaged in outreach to at-risk youths. His New York Times best-seller, The Other Wes Moore, tells the story of two young men with similar backgrounds and shared names, the different paths they took and why. Recently Moore debuted as the host of the new television show, Beyond Belief, airing on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

He is a regular commentator on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, and recently appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher.

Moore became a member of Delta Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Valley Forge Military College in Pennsylvania, serving as chapter president, student body president and Regimental Commander. He also completed the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies course.

Moore graduated from Johns Hopkins University, where he was tapped for Phi Beta Kappa. In 2004 he received a Master of Letters degree in International Relations from Oxford University, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. As a United States Army Captain, Moore served in the elite 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, in Afghanistan.

A White House Fellow from 2006-2007, Moore served as a Special Assistant to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In 2009 he was selected as an Asia Society Fellow. Moore was named one of Ebony magazine’s “Top 30 Leaders Under 30” for 2007 and Crain’s New York Business’ “40 Under 40 Rising Stars” in 2009.

While a Valley Forge cadet, Moore was a member of a Phi Theta Kappa Convention Color Guard. He was a panelist for Convention speaker Madeleine Albright, and has spoken at both the Annual Convention and Honors Institute. He is a Trustee of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.

Moore has credited his Phi Theta Kappa experiences, as a student and as an alumnus, with inspiring him to not only achieve personal success but to give back through service.

When he heard the story of the other Wes Moore, currently serving a life sentence for felony murder, he said “I realized how easily that could have been me, if I had not had people in my life – including Phi Theta Kappa people – who took time for me.” He is now a frequent speaker on youth issues and works with a number of youth advocacy organizations.

“Wes has an amazing story and we are so proud that he has always included Phi Theta Kappa in the life experiences that led to his success,” said Society Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley. “As a student, as a soldier, as an entrepreneur and above all as a servant leader, his passion has always been to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Phi Theta Kappa’s 2012 Annual Convention is scheduled April 12-14 at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee.
