Time to hit the reset button. You can now set a new goal for your chapter in the Five Star Chapter Plan.
The Five Star Plan puts the mission of Phi Theta Kappa into action through five levels of engagement that progress from local, campus involvement to regional and international involvement. A breakdown of the Five Star Chapter Plan can be found in the Chapter Leaders’ Guide to Success.
The guide includes a suggested timeline aimed at helping you complete your goal. All chapters should have received a copy of the guide at the beginning of 2014. New chapter advisors and presidents also will receive this helpful tool as they are reported to Headquarters throughout the year.
“The Five Star Plan is a barometer for Phi Theta Kappa that measures the engagement of our chapters,” said Jennifer Stanford, Phi Theta Kappa’s Chief Student Engagement Officer. “Participation at every level of the Five Star Plan is critical to fulfilling our mission, which is why we encourage all chapters to participate at the level that fits them best each year.
“Every chapter begins anew every calendar year, allowing chapters to have a fresh start and a challenging goal year after year.”
Below are some activities you can do now to get your Five Star goal off to a good start. Please note that this timeline is only a suggestion; many of these activities can be completed at any time. Be sure to report your progress regularly.
Set a membership recruitment goal for each induction in 2014. Advisors – open the winter/spring PAM enrollment period.
Conduct an induction ceremony. Provide information about chapter activities and the benefits of engaging in them, and encourage new members to run for chapter leadership positions.
Now is often a good time to meet with the college president or other administrator to discuss chapter goals and involvement on campus; begin dialogue about a possible College Project; share experiences at regional and international events and any recognition received; and discuss plans and needs for the remainder of the year.
Late spring is often when chapters have officer elections for the next summer, fall and spring semesters; new officers should begin by reviewing the chapter bylaws.

Get the word out about meetings and activities with a chapter newsletter, website, and/or published articles in a college publication.
Keep a complete chronicle of the chapter’s activities.

Spring means Regional Conventions, and attendance at a regional event and engaging with the region is a Four Star requirement. Check your region’s information at ptk.org/regions. Check for summer and fall events too and plan ahead.
How will your chapter engage with the region?
- Campaign for regional office
- Contribute to the regional Honors in Action Project
- Host or help lead a regional event
- Collaborate with at least two other chapters in the region for an activity or event
Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Academy and Convention on April 24-26, 2014, in Orlando, Florida, is one of the options to fulfill the Five Star requirement to participate at the international level. Learn more at nerdnation.ptk.org.
Phi Theta Kappa’s Honors Institute at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, June 16-21, 2014, is one option to fulfill the Five Star requirement to participate at the international level. Register before May 16 to receive the lowest rate at ptk.org/honors/institute.
If your chapter is unable to attend the Annual Convention OR Honors Institute, the requirement to participate at the international level can be met by all chapter officers participating in both Competitive Edge and CollegeFish.org, viewing three recorded Convention or Honors Institute speaker presentations (located at my.ptk.org), and the chapter completing an Honors Case Study Challenge.
