Phi Theta Kappa + Heads Up America

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has joined more than 60,000 people who have pledged their support for America’s College Promise, President Barack Obama’s call for two years of free community college for responsible students, through the White House’s Heads Up America campaign.

The Heads Up America movement is a grass-roots effort to spread the word about the value of community college and to support America’s College Promise. Throughout the country, more than 9 million students stand to benefit from the success of the Heads Up movement.

“Phi Theta Kappa members understand that a little opportunity can be the beginning of changing one’s legacy,” said Robin Keel, an alumnus of the Alpha Xi Pi Chapter at Motlow State Community College in Tennessee and a 2015 Hites Scholar. “Our hallmarks are not just concepts; they are actions. We need to step up as leaders and be willing to serve on our campuses to help facilitate this transition.”

The Heads Up campaign will coordinate a national Week of Action October 26-30. Chapters are encouraged to organize and host Open House events on their campuses throughout the week to demonstrate the value of community college and to bring together those who believe an affordable community college education benefits everyone.

Here are three tips to get started as you plan your event:

  • Take a look at the Open House outline, which includes various goals and activities you might include at your own event.
  • If you decide to host an Open House or plan to work with your campus team to organize one, please register your event using this form.
  • Be sure to look through the Heads Up toolkit, which includes helpful organizational and social media resources.

“America’s College Promise is about giving the opportunity to gain an education and to succeed to those who might not otherwise get it,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, Phi Theta Kappa’s Interim Executive Director. “We at Phi Theta Kappa strive to do that same thing. We offer our members opportunities to grow their skills and change their stories in ways they never before thought possible.

“We are proud to join and support the Heads Up America movement as it works to extend the benefits of community college to all responsible students. We hope you’ll join us and pledge your support.”
