New Transfer Scholarship: Sierra Nevada University

Sierra Nevada University (SNU) is Nevada’s only accredited, private, four-year institution, and it’s located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the shores of Lake Tahoe. It’s also the only four-year college in Nevada to offer a Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarship.

SNU is defined by four themes: Entrepreneurial Thinking, Professional Preparedness, Liberal Arts, and Sustainability. These themes are brought to life for students through active learning processes that build problem solving, teamwork, and innovation.

SNU offers $1,000 a year to Phi Theta Kappa members, many of whom also qualify for merit-based scholarships of up to $14,000. Learn more about SNU in this brief Q&A.

Tell us about your college’s new transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members.

At Sierra Nevada University, you “design your degree” through hands-on learning projects and classes, focused internships, and dedicated faculty mentoring. PTK transfer students are well suited to, and engage with, our style of instruction. Due to the rigor and academic excellence of PTK students, we want to extend a merit-based scholarship to reflect this.

Why does your college feel it is important to offer a scholarship opportunity for members?

Transferring to a four-year college is a big decision! Our skilled team of faculty advisors meet with you to create your graduation plan and assist you with class registration. You have ALL the information you need to graduate with a personal timeline. For PTK students, we wanted to go a step further. That is why we provide a scholarship to support PTK students on the financial side as well. We have wonderful gift aid and scholarships, so we can help students take the leap and finish their bachelor’s degree.

Are there other transfer scholarships that could be stacked with your Phi Theta Kappa award?

Yes! We have incredible gift aid and merit scholarships that are all stackable with the PTK scholarship to SNU Tahoe. Our transfer admissions counselor can let you know what your award package would be.

What other opportunities are available for transfer students at your institution to assist them in successfully transitioning from community college?

We have an incredible faculty advising program where students will receive one-on-one help registering for classes and planning their schedule. Our advisors also help students with internship and job placement and provide post-graduation advising. Your Admissions Transfer counselor can help you with housing options including on-campus options. We even have a transfer specific orientation once you’re on campus in the fall.

In your opinion, what is one of the most impressive things about your college?

SNU Tahoe is dedicated to active learning — for example, instead of reading about an environmental testing experiment in a textbook, you head out on the UC Davis Research boat on Lake Tahoe with your SNU Tahoe professor. You and your class take samples and conduct undergraduate research in the field! Never during your time at SNU Tahoe will you be sitting in the back of a lecture hall — instead, you will be engaging with your classes, faculty, and the real-world setting of your field of study.

Are there any special events or deadlines on your recruitment calendar that you would like to share?

We are rolling admissions at SNU Tahoe, but to maximize scholarship opportunities, we encourage all students interested to complete their free application on our website as soon as possible. Application is online at sierranevada.edu/apply. Please include your PTK status on the application so we can be sure to include your scholarship upon admissions. We are ready to welcome our incoming class for Fall 2019 at our Lake Tahoe campus.
