New Transfer Scholarship: Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve Univsersity

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio, is the latest four-year college to establish a transfer scholarship exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members, and it’s a big one: $20,000 a year.

It gets better — this scholarship can be stacked with other offers from the college, and there’s an unlimited amount of them, meaning all qualified applicants can receive it.

CWRU is the top-ranked private research university in Ohio and one of the best in the United States. Students can launch research projects as early as their first year on campus. The college sponsored more than 1,300 research projects and produced more than 275 new inventions in the 2017-2018 academic year.

It is located in Cleveland’s University Circle, a vibrant park-like neighborhood minutes from downtown that includes more than 50 arts, cultural, educational, health, and human service institutions on 550 acres.

Tell us about your college’s new transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members:

Recognizing community college transfer students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and leadership achievement, it is an award of $20,000 per year. The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship is awarded to active Phi Theta Kappa members who are applying as transfer students. Students are automatically considered for the scholarship; there is no separate scholarship application.

Why does your college feel it’s important to offer a scholarship opportunity for PTK members?

Case Western Reserve University strives to support an environment of diversity and inclusion. We value students who are curious about and respect other perspectives and are willing to contribute their unique insights to the community. We believe that community college transfer students bring with them valuable perspectives and experiences that enhance and strengthen the university — both in and outside the classroom. Phi Theta Kappa members are scholars who have demonstrated their commitment to academics and leadership, and we actively recruit them to join our community.

What other opportunities are available for transfer students at your institution to assist them in successfully transitioning from community college?

Case Western Reserve University offers many opportunities to assist transfer students in successfully transitioning to the university. Upon enrolling at CWRU, an academic advisor will assist you with questions about transfer credit and course selection. Once you declare a major, the emphasis shifts to major-focused advising with a faculty advisor assigned from that field to guide you in the construction of an academic plan and to monitor your progress in pursuit of that plan.

You are also paired with a navigator upon your enrollment. Your navigator will remain a resource for you throughout your time at CWRU. Their primary job is to understand, support, and connect you with resources and individuals specific to your needs. Your navigator also will work closely with your faculty advisor so that each is up to date on academic progress, experiential learning activities, and any other developments important to your overall well-being.

What is one of the most impressive things about your college?

From the moment students become part of the Case Western Reserve University community, they are immersed in and are integral to a culture of ambition and achievement. An entire team of faculty and administrators is in place to help you discover opportunities and experiences that move you purposefully toward your career and educational goals.

Your peers will inspire you with their curiosity and clever application of what they are learning. You will inspire others by the questions you ask, the risks you take, and your desire to make your world better. While we tackle projects and problems — and solve them — in a way that makes us seem like a much larger university, you will find our community of 5,200 undergraduates to be incredibly friendly, kind, and encouraging.
