SUNY Geneseo Establishes PTK Transfer Scholarship

SUNY Geneseo

SUNY Geneseo in New York has established a transfer scholarship exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members: $1,500 a year that can be renewed for an additional year.

Geneseo is a public liberal arts college located a short drive from Rochester and Buffalo. It boasts small class sizes, a student-to-faculty ratio of 18:1, and a classic northeastern college aesthetic.

The college is ranked third in the “Top Public Schools” in the North on U.S. News & World Report’s regional rankings list. It is fourth in the regional “Best Undergraduate Teaching” category and fifth in the regional “Most Innovative School” category.

What other opportunities are available for transfer students at your institution to assist them in successfully transitioning from community college?

Transfer Student Experience (Living Learning Community) — Transfer Student Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) are designated floors of residence halls (Livingston, Nassau, and Erie Hall) where transfer students can opt to live together. A Transfer Student Mentor (specially trained Resident Assistant) lives on the floor and helps transfer students navigate the college. The proposed outcome for this opportunity is for transfer students to learn how to navigate the academic, professional, and social support systems in place at Geneseo.

Transfer Student Mentors (TSMs) — A Transfer Student Mentor (TSM) is a Resident Assistant who lives in one of three residence halls with a significant population of transfer students. In addition to completing RA responsibilities, the TSM will create engagement opportunities specifically for transfer students to link them to their peers in the Geneseo community. The TSM will create meaningful experiences for students and will communicate important campus information and events to transfer students assimilating to the Geneseo campus culture. Each Transfer Student Mentor will create passive and active educational opportunities in their residence halls to engage transfer students. During fall and spring semesters, they will hold office hours in the Transfer Resource Center to supplement the YouBelong series offered by the Office of New Student Programs. The TSM will attend specific training sessions and participate in orientation events and presentations for transfer students, such as the Transfer Student Picnic and Transfer Week.

Transfer Student Orientation — Geneseo First-Year and Transfer Student Orientation is offered throughout the summer (virtually) and will culminate in August (in-person) in the days prior to the beginning of the semester. During orientation, transfer students will meet students, faculty, and staff, obtain their student ID, schedule an appointment to speak with an academic advisor regarding their proposed course schedule, begin building connections with other transfer students, learn important details and expectations from their academic department, and understand resources available to students as well as involvement in the many academic and co-curricular opportunities that campus has to offer.

Tau Sigma National Honor Society (Chapter Membership in Progress) — Tau Sigma National Honor Society is a national honor society designed exclusively for transfer students. The mission is to “recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students.” Tau Sigma provides its members opportunities to earn scholarships, attend leadership conferences, take leadership positions in the university, and serve others at the university and in the community, all while developing friendships and becoming a more integral part of the university to which they transferred.

Transfer Student Coordinator — It is the mission of our transfer student counselor to provide a transfer-friendly environment throughout the entirety of the transfer admissions process. We vow to provide a personable and efficient process from start to finish. If SUNY Geneseo is where you envision yourself, our transfer counselor is committed to working alongside you in making that a reality.
