I have wanted to make sure that my kids stay connected to their ...cultural heritage. To do this, I speak French to them and send them to bilingual programs and school so that they can see and meet other people speaking the language. It is a gift because learning the language has come naturally while they’ve grown up.

History: Founded in 1918 at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, PTK is the official honor society for two-year colleges, recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) since 1929.
Headquarters: PTK’s headquarters are in Jackson, Mississippi.
Symbols: The primary symbol representing PTK is the Phi Theta Kappa Key.
Members: Members of PTK are referred to as “Phi Theta Kappa members,” “Phi Theta Kappans,” or “PTK members”.
Chapters: PTK has nearly 1,300 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, and other countries.
Journals: PTK publishes Civic Scholar: Phi Theta Kappa Journal of Undergraduate Research and Change Makers: Phi Theta Kappa Journal of Student Leadership.

The Phi Theta Kappa Founders Medal Award recognizes a graduating PTK member who has written the finest essay reflecting on the value of a community college education each year. This award is sponsored by Phi Theta ...Kappa’s Board of Directors.
Eligible applicants must be a Phi Theta Kappa member participating in commencement in the Spring of 2025 and may only submit a manuscript while enrolled in a two-year program or one-year certificate.
The winning student will receive a special medal at graduation and a $1,000 cash scholarship.
